calling all creatives: logo art contest
The Year of the Red Fire Horse kicks off Feb. 17, and Ming Toy Gallery will be honoring this rare and powerful symbol in a new way throughout its 2026 reign. But first, a little background…
A lot of folks may be somewhat familiar with the 12 animals of Chinese astrology: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. (We celebrated Rabbit, Dragon and Snake with December exhibitions in 2023, 2024 and 2025, respectively.) But we’re guessing many don’t know that each animal year also combines with one of the five fundamental elements – Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water – to create a 60-year cycle.
The last time the Red Fire Horse made an appearance was in 1966 – the same year there were 389,000 U.S. troops in Vietnam, Time magazine published its “Is God Dead” issue and The Sound of Music won five Oscars.
The Horse is admired for its vitality, independence and charisma. It symbolizes freedom, swift movement and unbridled energy. The Fire element is associated with passion, drive, leadership and a little unpredictability. When you combine the two, you get people who are highly energetic, charismatic and persuasive, stubborn and independent, fiercely intelligent and quick tempered. They are natural trendsetters and leaders who are quick to make decisions, sometimes impulsively. It’s been said a fire horse burns everything to rebuild.
