Introducing the Ming Toy Dragon

2024 is the Year of the Dragon. The fifth symbol in the Chinese Zodiac, the Dragon is powerful, endlessly energetic and full of vitality, goal-oriented yet idealistic and romantic, and a visionary leader. They know exactly who they are and possess the keenest sense of self among the 12 zodiacs of Chinese astrology.

Ming Toy Gallery asked local artist James MM Baldwin to create a dragon to mark the occasion.

An artist, curator, speculative fiction author, poet, singer, songwriter and musician, Baldwin has created art under the brush-name Sergio de Companion since 2003. Beginning with abstract expressionism as a foundation for emotion in design, Sergio’s art has evolved into using shape and color to portray form and depth.

Viewers recognize his colorful, linear stylized depictions of people and animals. In his lineal primary series, Sergio breaks form into fragments. He imagines his subjects as geometric shapes and divides them into smaller pieces, separating the pieces with space. Once he assembles those building blocks, he uses color to sharpen the object and create depth. Many of his other creations include 3-D paper mâché and found object embellishments.

James has curated Omaha Gallery since early 2018. He has also produced and recorded three rock albums, and written and published two novels, two short story collections, and two poetry compilations.

Ming Toy Gallery is currently seeking entries for the 2024 Dragon Invitational that showcase power, energy, vitality, idealism, romanticism, vision or a keen sense of self. There is no entry fee, and submissions are limited to one per artist. Email us a photo and description of your work by Sept. 1, 2024. Entries must be delivered by Nov. 1. The opening reception is Dec. 6, 2024. Questions? Call or text 402.681.1901.
